Due to the closure of the proton radiation effects facility at Indiana University, a search for alternate sources is in progress. This search is largely based on medical radiation treatment centers located throughout the country. As part of this search, Dr. Steve Guertin participated in “shake-out” testing of electronics using the proton source at Scripps Proton Therapy Center (PTC) in San Diego on May 1st and 2nd, 2015. The test was organized by Ken Label of NASA GSFC and Dr. Lei Dong of Scripps PTC. Participants included Aerospace Corporation, Boeing, GSFC, and others. Findings indicated the facility can provide the type of proton exposures often required for proton single-event testing for space missions. Some differences between medical and electronics testing needs resulted in minor findings to streamline for future, such as using collimators that produce less activation, and methods to reduce production of fast neutrons that can affect other electronics in the test area.
